The Shadow and the Promise
April 3, 2026 / Dr. John P. Marr1. The and Extent of God’s Love
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
2. The of Weight
Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering… he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:4-5
3. The of “It Is Finished.”
So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. John 19:30
A. The gap between God and man was
But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit. 51 Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom, the earth quaked, and the rocks were split. – Matthew 27:50-51
Therefore, brothers and sisters, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body… let us draw near to God with a heart and with the full assurance that faith brings. — Hebrews 10:19–22
B. The power of sin that defines us was
13 You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins. 14 He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross. – Colossians 2:13-14
“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin—because anyone who has died has been set free from sin.” – Romans 6:6–7
C. The requirement of the law was
“For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it.” — James 2:10
He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit. – Romans 8:4
If by the one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive the overflow of grace and the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:17
