1. The Hand on the Tiller (vv. 1–5a)
1 Not many should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we will receive a stricter judgment.2 For we all stumble in many ways. If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is mature, able also to control the whole body.3 Now if we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we direct their whole bodies. 4 And consider ships: Though very large and driven by fierce winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. 5a. So too, though the tongue is a small part of the body, it boasts great things
Proverbs 18:21 CSB – 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
Psalm 141:3 CSB – 3 LORD, set up a guard for my mouth; keep watch at the door of my lips.

2. Subversive leverage (vv. 5b–8)
5b. Consider how a small fire sets ablaze a large forest. 6 And the tongue is a fire. The tongue, a world of unrighteousness, is placed among our members. It stains the whole body, sets the course of life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 7 Every kind of animal, bird, reptile, and fish is tamed and has been tamed by humankind, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.
Proverbs 16:27 CSB – 27 A worthless person digs up evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire.
Matthew 12:36 CSB – 36 “I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless word they speak.

3. The Source and the Stream (vv. 9–12)
9 With the tongue we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in God’s likeness. 10 Blessing and cursing come out of the same mouth. My brothers and sisters, these things should not be this way. 11 Does a spring pour out sweet and bitter water from the same opening? 12 Can a fig tree produce olives, my brothers and sisters, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a saltwater spring yield fresh water.
Luke 6:45: “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good… for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.”
Matthew 7:16: “You will recognize them by their fruits.”

Conclusion:
You cannot simply “try harder” to speak better.
7 Day Challenge
- Practice the “5-Second Rule.” Before you respond to a frustrating email, a spouse’s critique, or a child’s mess, pause for five seconds.
- Perform a “Water Sample” Audit. Think back on your most frequent words. Were they salty (bitter, sarcastic, complaining, critical) or sweet (encouraging, grateful, truthful)?
What you want to say may be true, but would it be loving to say it?
Community Life Group Question
1. James compares the tongue to a rudder on a ship. Can you share a time when a small comment (positive or negative) completely changed the “direction” of your day or a relationship?
2. Verse 6 says the tongue “sets the course of life on fire.” In our modern world, how does social media or texting act as the “spark” for a forest fire?
3. In verses 11–12, James says a spring cannot produce both fresh and salt water. If your words this past week were a “water sample,” what would they reveal about the “source” (your heart) right now?
4.What is one practical way you can “set a guard” over your mouth this week?
How can we pray for you?
