(11) “I will rebuke the devourer for you so that it will not ruin the produce of your land and your vine in your field will not fail to produce fruit,” says the LORD of Armies. (12) “Then all the nations will consider you fortunate, for you will be a delightful land,” says the LORD of Armies.”  Malachi 3:8-12

2. Tithing as Legalism ( & & )

“Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!  For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness.  These you ought to have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, straining out a gnat and swallowing a camel!” Matthew 23:23-24

3. Tithing as Worship ( & of )

Misconception = Tithing as Worship is a New Testament thing.

“(17) After Abram returned from defeating Chedorlaomer and the kings who were with him, the king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Shaveh Valley (that is, the King’s Valley). (18) Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought out bread and wine; he was a priest to God Most High. (19) He blessed him and said: Abram is blessed by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, (20) and blessed be God Most High who has handed over your enemies to you. And Abram gave him a tenth of everything. (21) Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the people, but take the possessions for yourself.” (22) But Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have raised my hand in an oath to the LORD, God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth, (23) “that I will not take a thread or sandal strap or anything that belongs to you, so you can never say, ‘I made Abram rich.’ (24) “I will take nothing except what the servants have eaten. But as for the share of the men who came with me — Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre —, they can take their share.” – Genesis 14:17-24 CSB

2. our allegiance to God.

“(18) Early in the morning Jacob took the stone that was near his head and set it up as a marker. He poured oil on top of it (19) and named the place Bethel, though previously the city was named Luz. (20) Then Jacob made a vow: “If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I’m making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear, (21) “and if I return safely to my father’s family, then the LORD will be my God. (22) “This stone that I have set up as a marker will be God’s house, and I will give to you a tenth of all that you give me.”” – Genesis 28:18-22 CSB

3. an overflowing of toward God

(18) Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share, (19) store up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age so that they may take hold of what is truly life.” – 1 Timothy 6:17-19

THE PRACTICAL.

“(6) The point is this: The person who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and the person who sows generously will also reap generously. (7) Each person should do as he has decided in his heart — not reluctantly or out of compulsion since God loves a cheerful giver. (8) And God is able to make every grace overflow to you, so that in every way, always having everything you need, you may excel in every good work.” –

2 Corinthians 9:6-8

“(1) Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship.” – Romans 12:1

A FACT:

If you have the means, you can do anything your heart desires. However, if your heart is not in something, you can always find a way not to do it because you don’t have the means.

A CHALLENGE:

Start by asking God to speak to you about what you should start giving, and if needed ask him to change your attitude if you feel it’s wrong toward this topic.  (only you know).
